Sanitation Driver
Under regular supervision, drives and operates garbage trucks and other equipment in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial garbage and trash. Work involves following established collection routes, maintaining equipment and vehicle, and supervising workers in the absence of the Supervisor. Reports to the Sanitation Services Supervisor.

Job Summary: Under regular supervision, drives and operates trucks and other equipment used in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse or recyclable materials along established, City collection routes. Work also involves maintaining equipment and vehicles, and performing related tasks as required. May be expected to guide workers in the absence of a supervisor. The driver Reports to the Sanitation Supervisor.
Job Functions:
- Operates packer-type trucks equipped with hydraulic lifting device to collect garbage and trash; transports loads to disposal location.
- Completes specific routes on schedule.
- Manually loads/unloads materials onto vehicles as needed.
- Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
- Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
- Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
- Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety; ensures the consistent and proper use of safety gear.
- Assists co-workers with various duties as required; may provide training and leadership of co-workers as assigned.
- Attends training, meetings, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Performs duties of supervisor as required in the supervisor's absence.
- Prepares and submits accurate logs, reports and special purpose forms.
- Refers to safety manuals, policies and procedures, operational manuals, codes/laws/regulations, maps, schedules, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the supervisor, co-workers, other City employees, customers and the general public.
Additional Job Functions:
- Performs general building and grounds maintenance tasks as assigned.
- May assist other City departments with equipment operations as requested.
- May operate snow removal equipment to maintain streets, sidewalks, and driveways; may spread sand and salt on roadways/walkways as necessary in inclement weather.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent with one to two years of experience in equipment operations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid West Virginia CDL Class "B" driver's license.
Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which involves the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of items of moderately heavy weight (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier weight (up to 100 pounds).
